About the Law
The Affordable Care Act puts consumers back in charge of their health care. Under the law, a new “Patient’s Bill of Rights” gives the American people the stability and flexibility they need to make informed choices about their health.

What’s covered by health insurance?
In general, your policy helps cover doctor visits, surgery, hospital bills, pharmacy costs, and X-ray and lab expenses. Some plans also include vision, dental, long-term, short-term, and mental health care. However, coverage varies quite a bit from plan to plan, so be sure to get to know the specifics of your policy or talk to an agent if you have any questions.
Buying your health insurance plan
We'll help you get a health insurance quote so you can purchase a policy that feels right for you. Plus, you can even access subsidized health plans through the Affordable Care Act.
After choosing a plan, it is easy to apply for a policy directly online. Typically, once an insurer reviews your application, you'll find out whether you are approved, approved with conditions, denied, or if the insurer needs more information before making a decision.
Though it is rare to come across a fee just for applying for coverage, some insurers do charge a non-refundable application fee. Also, if you decide against a particular policy during the underwriting process, you can always cancel at no additional cost to you.
How health insurance works
Whether it's a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan or Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan, you have a lot of choices when it comes to health insurance. Each policy has a deductible amount and a premium amount. The deductible is your out-of-pocket expense — what you pay before your insurance provider steps in. The premium is what you pay every month or year for the policy itself.
There are a lot of ways to customize your plan to suit your wallet and well-being. Policies with higher deductibles typically come with lower premium payments, although you'll still likely be responsible for paying for some medical bills.
Policies with lower deductibles are more expensive initially, but usually provide better coverage options.
When getting a health insurance quote, it's important to be as honest as possible. In certain cases, undisclosed conditions can result in a canceled policy when you need it most.
